Our therapy sessions always have a book recommendation part. And apparently I'm really good at recommending books, but I get so animated and excited that the book sometimes doesn't actually live up to my hype. Ah well.
My therapist recommended I re-activate this book blog. And she said I should also start a book recommendation TikTok. So maybe be on the lookout for that...eventually.
In the meantime, here are some of the books I have read in the last few-several months that I enjoyed enough to recommend them to anyone who likes a good story. In full disclosure, I listened to all these on audiobook, so that may be why I am a little more enthusiastic about them than other books I read.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano - I laughed out loud many times during this comedy/thriller. Finlay is a writer of romance novels and is also a newly single mom of two small kids. During a meeting with her agent at Panera, a woman at a neighboring table overhears her discussing her advances and thinks she's a hitwoman. Finlay somehow manages to bumble her way through the rest of the book, the one she's in and the one she's writing. I am not a fan of thrillers, but I am a fan of funny, and I highly recommend this if you like either of those and/or just a good story. This is the book I was told wasn't as good as I made it out to be, so I'm wondering if the audiobook hits differently than the print book.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhou - I don't even know how to start to describe Iron Widow. For starters, the main character, Zetian, is completely bad-ass. She takes it upon herself to avenge her sister's death at the hands of a Chrysalis pilot and discovers that the entire society has been built on a lie. If you like scifi at all, even a little bit, read this book.
The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells - Murderbot (his private name, please don't overuse it) is an AI SecUnit (security guard/bodyguard) who somehow managed to hack his governor module. Now he doesn't have to take orders so he chooses what to obey and how to obey it. He lives like this for four years because he doesn't know what to do with his freedom. Instead he watches TV shows in his feed. Murderbot has anxiety. And that's all you need to know. Now go find all these books and read them. I highly recommend the audiobook on these because then you get to hear the sarcasm.
