Whoa! Where did this dark side of Julie Kagawa come from? Love. It. I will 100% buy this series for my library and I will have to disappoint all my students when I tell them the third one won’t come out until???? Why do authors wait a year or more between books? Six months, tops, should be the norm. Help a librarian/bibliophile out!
Anyway, back to the series. This is not just a vampire series. This is a dystopian vampire series on steroids. Kagawa has thrown her own vision of vampires to the generous vampire genre and with it, a curve ball. It’s not immediately obvious that a vampire is a vampire in her world. Sure, they only go out from dusk til dawn, but the humans and rabids and mole men are active at that time as well. Rabids? Oh, they’re the outcome when a lower level vampire tries to turn a human into another vampire. See, there’s a hierarchy to the vampires in Kagawa’s world. At the top are the Level 3 vampires, aka Masters. Then, there are Level 2, then Level 1. Below them are rabids, then pets, then registered humans, then the Unregistered. And that’s where we meet Allie. She is an Unregistered human, meaning she doesn’t go in for the weekly “feed” from vampires. Therefore, she doesn’t get three meals a day like they do. She and the other unregistereds must scavenge for food and shelter and heat and safety. It’s a pitiful life, but they are free. Kind of.
I will recommend these books to anyone who enjoys vampire books or dystopians. The dystopian element is very strong and may intrigue those who like The Hunger Games.
Book 1: The Immortal Rules (out)
Book 2: The Eternity Cure (coming April 30, 2013)
Book 3: ????????
