First, thank you so much to NetGalley.com and DAW Books for allowing me access to this ARC.
Second, this review is for Book #13 of a series that isn't close to being done yet. Please keep that in mind if you haven't read Books 1-12. But you should TOTALLY read books 1-12. Now.
The Unkindest Tale is when the Luidaeg FINALLY has her reckoning with the Selkies. These has been a prophecy about a blood worker and the Selkies, but I haven't actually heard or read this prophecy yet, so it must be super vague and basically a rumor by this point.
One of my favorite parts of this book is when everyone shows up at the ship to go to The Duchy of Ships with Toby and the Luidaeg. It was laugh out loud funny as more and more people showed up and explained why they were going.
One issue I have is with Marcia. She walked onto the ship with no reaction to the change from mortal to Summerlands and Toby questioned it...before beginning her vomiting spree. Then it seemed to be forgotten. So what is going on with Marcia? Will this be answered in the future? There were a couple more questions of who she was, but immediately dropped. So now I'm intrigued and I hope I'm not left hanging.
I feel like I can't really tell much more about the book without giving it away. This has been my favorite Toby book so far. We get to see her in all her hero glory and see her reliance on help from others. It's nice that she has finally grown enough as a hero that she allows others to help when necessary. She still feels bad about it, but at least she asks. I like her newly strengthening backbone.
Please, please, please read this series. I am a HUGE urban fantasy fan and this is one of the few that deal with the actual fae. I will be devastated when there are no more books, but since there are several more listed on Goodreads, it'll be a while before I get there.
