Uses for Boys was written in the style of Weetzie Bat, a book I did not like at all. The difference is the first person point of view of Anna, the main character in Uses for Boys.
I can't remember the last time my heart broke for a character as it did for Anna. The short chapters and choppy sentences created a full feeling of how abruptly her life changed and how empty it is. I wanted to reach through the pages and hit her mother. How can someone be so oblivious and invested only in their own happiness and be so thoughtless of her daughter's?
The biggest surprise came at the end with Toy. I totally did not see that revelation coming.
I don't know how much I enjoyed or liked this book. I'm having a hard time coming to grips with it. On one hand, I could not put it down. I just had to know what happened to Anna next. On the other hand, the book was so sad.
I don't even know to whom I would recommend this book. Maybe students who are going through a hard time and can tolerate a very mature theme.
