I didn’t think McGuire could keep the same intensity that Beautiful Disaster had. Beautiful Disaster has been described by more than several reviewers as literary crack; you can’t put it down and keep coming back for more. I was wrong. Walking Disaster, which is the same story, but told from Travis’ point of view, is probably even more intense. How can it not be? Travis Maddox is the most intense character I’ve ever read. To experience the same story, and I mean the exact same story, verbatim in the conversations, but from Travis’ point of view, is nothing short of genius on the part of McGuire. I cried even harder during this book because I knew both sides of the story. Every time Travis’ dad was in a scene, I had to grab a tissue. I knew I was in for it when I couldn’t even read the prologue because I was crying so hard. When Trent told Travis he already told everyone they had actually broken up, I broke down. It’s a little embarrassing to be crying so hard when reading a book, especially when I’m reading it at school. *sigh*
I loved being able to fill in the gaps of time from Beautiful Disaster. I now know exactly when and why Travis bought that ring. I ached when he said he had never held a door open for a girl and Abby didn’t even bat an eye when he did it for her. I wanted to shake her and scream, “WTH are you doing????!!! Don’t you see he loves you?!” I’m pretty sure I felt the same about him when I read her story.
SPOILER!!!
But the kicker about this book, the jaw-dropper, the piece that pushed it over the edge was the epilogue. Did you notice the kids’ names were Jessica and James? Did you remember that was the name on Abby’s fake ID? I got that. And I laughed out loud. Loudly out loud. I have no idea what the next book will be about, but by gosh, there better be a next book.
